Indianapolis Colts - Team
History & Information
The Indianapolis Colts are a professional American football team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. They are members of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
The club was officially founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1953, but can trace its history to the Dayton Triangles, a founding member of the NFL that was originally created in 1913. After a series of changes, it assumed the "Baltimore Colts" name, replacing a previous team that folded in 1950. Playing at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, the Colts became the first NFL team to have cheerleaders. The team then relocated to Indianapolis in 1984, first playing at the RCA Dome before moving to Lucas Oil Stadium in 2008.
The Indianapolis Colts currently hold their annual training camp from late July to mid-August on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Indianapolis Colts - Lucas Oil Stadium
Lucas Oil Stadium is a multi-purpose sports stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stadium celebrated its grand opening on August 24, 2008, in a game against the Buffalo Bills and its ribbon-cutting ceremony August 16, 2008. It replaced the RCA Dome as the home field of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.
The retro look to the new stadium is a result of Indianapolis' liking towards the historic fieldhouse appearance of sports venues from decades ago. Conseco Fieldhouse, Hinkle Fieldhouse, and the Pepsi Coliseum are other examples of large sports venues (both new and old) around the city with the same type of design.
Seating capacity for football games is 63,000; an increase of more than 5,000 over the RCA Dome. The stadium, when it will host a Super Bowl, can be expanded to a capacity of 70,000.
