New York Jets - Team
History & Information
The New York Jets are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. They are members of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
The team began in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League under the name Titans of New York. The team played home games at the Polo Grounds. But they had trouble attracting crowds despite fielding respectable teams. The Titans of New York were renamed after a five-man syndicate bought the team in 1963. The Jets later joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL Merger.
The team plays its home games in East Rutherford, New Jersey, at Giants Stadium. The team is scheduled to play at Meadowlands Stadium beginning in the 2010 NFL season. In a unique arrangement, the team will share the stadium with the New York Giants.
New York Jets - Giants Stadium
Giants Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA, in the Meadowlands Sports Complex. It primarily serves as the home stadium for the New York Giants and New York Jets American football teams of the NFL, and the New York Red Bulls soccer team of MLS.
Maximum seating capacity is 80,242, making it the third-largest NFL stadium behind FedEx Field and Cowboys Stadium. It is also the ninth-oldest stadium used by an NFL team. Giants Stadium will be closed and demolished in 2010 when the new Meadowlands Stadium opens.
The stadium is located at State Route 120 and State Route 3 (which is accessed from Midtown Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel). The New Jersey Turnpike is also close by. It is also accessible by rail via New Jersey Transit's Meadowlands Station, but only for events when more than 50,000 attendees are expected.
