Seattle Seahawks - Team History & Information

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington. They are currently members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team, along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, joined the NFL in 1976 as expansion teams.

On December 5, 1974, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced the official signing of the franchise agreement by Lloyd W. Nordstrom, representing the Nordstrom family as majority partners for the consortium. Nordstrom died of a heart attack on January 20, 1976, just months before the Seahawks played their first game.

The name Seattle Seahawks (another name for osprey) was selected on June 17, 1975 after a public naming contest which drew more than 20,000 entries and over 1,700 different names.

Seattle Seahawks - Qwest Field

Qwest Field is a multi-purpose stadium in Seattle, Washington, United States. It serves as the home field for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL) and Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Qwest Field was originally called Seahawks Stadium upon completion in 2002. The telecommunications carrier Qwest acquired the naming rights for the stadium in June 2004. The complex also includes an Event Center with the WaMu Theater, a parking garage, and a public plaza. Along with sporting events, the venue hosts concerts, trade shows, and consumer shows.

The stadium is a modern facility with views of the nearby Seattle area. It has seating for 67,000 fans. Located within a mile (1.6 km) of Seattle's central business district, the venue is accessible by multiple freeways and forms of mass transit. The fans at Qwest Field are notoriously loud during Seahawks games. The noise has contributed to the team's home field advantage with an increase in false start penalties against visiting teams. The stadium was also the first in the NFL to install a FieldTurf artificial field.
